The Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996, state that an employer has a duty to provide a safe working environment to protect those at work. Furthermore, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (1998) require that lifting equipment such as fork lift trucks are strong, stable and used safely.

Despite such regulations, accidents often occur from the use of trucks due to improper training or a poor workplace layout. Common accident types resulting from the use of fork lift trucks often include over turning, heavy loads dropping onto people and collisions into walls.
