Repetitive Strain Injury Compensation Claims

Back to Accident at Work Claims

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a term that is used to refer to various kinds of injuries to muscles, tendons or nerves. These injuries are caused by repetitive movement of a particular part of the body. RSI can also be referred to as a work-related upper limb disorder (WRULD). This is because the condition can be caused or aggravated whilst at work and often involves the upper part of the body, typically the forearm, elbow, wrist, hands and neck.

The most common types of RSI include bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, epicondylitis and tendonitis.

In most cases, repetitive strain injury is brought on by a combination of the following:-

• Overuse of the muscles on a continued repetitive basis
• Vibrating equipment
• Poor posture or a badly organised work area that is not ergonomically friendly
• Prolonged periods of work without a break
• Carrying heavy loads on a repeated basis

Back injuries can also be classed as a repetitive strain injury, particularly if the injury has been caused or aggravated by repetitive lifting or bending whilst at work. The most common cause of this involves nurses and care assistants who frequently have to lift their patients in the course of their work.

The employer has a duty to conduct risk assessments and implement protective and preventive measures, taking account of the ergonomics of the working environment. In addition, the employer must seek to reduce the health and safety risks to employees from handling and lifting loads by conducting similar risk assessments. The same applies to any employees using visual display units in the workplace. The employer must assess and reduce any risks and also provide breaks and changes of activity.

Repetitive strain injury claims can often be complex and difficult to pursue.
