Southampton-based law firm holds Action Mesothelioma Day event

Leading Southampton-based law firm, Moore Blatch Resolve, hosted an event at its London Road office, to help raise awareness of the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma.

The event, held on Action Mesothelioma Day on Friday 27th February, saw health professionals, representatives of the British Lung Foundation and other guests gather at the clinical negligence and personal injury specialists’ offices to listen to a presentation made by a mesothelioma expert from Cardiff University. Guests were also able to talk to experts in the field and sign the mesothelioma charter, set up by the British Lung Foundation, which calls for improved care and treatment for mesothelioma patients, better protection for employees and more funding for research.

Ciaran McCabe, senior solicitor at Moore Blatch Resolve, says: “We feel that it’s really important to raise the profile of mesothelioma as it’s such a deadly disease which affects many people from the Southampton and surrounding areas due to the high levels of asbestos dust that used to be present around the shipping areas.

“We act on behalf of many clients in the Southampton area and nationally who have been affected by this horrible disease. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which affects the chest or the linings of the abdomen and there is no known cure. It can take up to 50 years for someone to develop mesothelioma following exposure to asbestos, which is why so many more cases are expected.

“On average, in the UK alone, 13 people are dying every day due to exposure to asbestos and that number is unfortunately expected to double by 2010 and to keep rising until at least 2015. To put that into context it is twice the number of road accident deaths each day in the UK.”
